Alkistis Protopsalti

Alkestis Protopsalti, was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on the 18th of October. Both her parents are Greek. Her family was forced to return to Greece in 1962, when the political circumstances became adverse for the Greeks living in Egypt.

At the age of 18, Alkestis sings Kavafis, Seferis, Karyotakis, and Ritsos in Dimos Moutsis’ «Tetralogia» (1975). In the period of 1975-6, Alkestis appears in «Aposperida» and «Lydra» (music halls in Plaka, Athens) with great Greek singers N.Xylouris, M.Koch. In 1976 Alkestis works with Ilias Andriopoulos for the first time and «Kyklos Seferi» is the LP that comes out, Alkestis Protopsalti and Nikos Xylouris.

The same year (1976) finds Alkestis working with Dimos Moutsis in the «Ergatiki Symfonia» (The Workers’ Symphony), giving concerts with Stavros Xarchakos, and participating in the Bost-Moursela play «Efimerevoume» (We are on duty) at the Smaroula Theatre. Her first personal LP «Apla tragoudia» (Simple songs) comes out in 1977.

In 1978, this young and talented artist works with Antonis Kalogiannis in the music hall «Epifania», and she appears with Antonis Kalogiannis and Grigoris Bithikotsis on Lycabetus. 1979 is when Alkestis sings «Grammata sto Makrygianni» (Letters to Makrygiannis) across the country, and when she participates in Dionysis Savvopoulos’ LP «Rezerva». Alkestis then works on songs from Mani (1600-1900 AD) in her LP «Maniatika» (1980).

In the period 1981-3 three LPs are «born», «Alkestis Protopsalti» (songs by Mikis Theodorakis, Ilias Andriopoulos, Loukianos Kilaidonis) (1981), «Fragma» (Wall) (1981), and «Telos den echei to tragoudi» (A song has no end) (1982). 1984 is a very important year, as two great LPs circulate: «Prosanatolismoi» (poetry by Nobel prize winner Odysseas Elytis, music by Ilias Andriopoulos) and «Exodos Kindynou» (lyrics by Lina Nikolakopoulou, music by Giannis Spanos).
In 1985 Alkestis’ voice meets the music of Stamatis Kraounakis, the lyrics of Lina Nikolakopoulou and Stamatis Kraounakis in «Kykloforo ki Oploforo», a LP with sales over 70.000 records. This very active artist adds four records to her discography in the period of 1986-7: «Paei i agapi mou» (My love has gone) (1986), «Lysistrati» (1986), «Leoforos A'» (Live recording of the musical performance by Andreas Voutsinas, Lina Nikolakopoulou, and Stamatis Kraounakis with Eleutheria Arvanitaki and Kostas Ganotis) (1986), Giorgos Ntalaras’ «Latin» in which Alkestis sings «Mambo Brazileiro» (1987).

Alkestis participates in Kostas Ganotis’ «Karavania» (Caravans) (1993); in 1993 the compilation record «Epitychies» (Hits) is released with songs from the artist’s records with LYRA. 1993 is also when another great record comes out: «Anthropon Erga» (The works of man); the music is once more by Stamatis Kraounakis and the lyrics, of course, by Lina Nikolakopoulou. Another monumental musical masterpiece.

Alkestis is a very bold and restless woman. Together with Andreas Voutsinas, Lina Nikolakopoulou, Stamatis Kraounakis, and Ilias Marosoulis they created the "hottest" scene in Athens, they transformed a dead area into the center of musical live performances.
